Fast & Fun Birthday Cards with the Mermaid Party Stamp Set!

Hello, crafty friends! Rick here, and I’m so excited to be sharing a fun and fast set of birthday cards with you today over on the C.C. Designs blog!

We’ve all been there — a birthday sneaks up on you, and suddenly you’re scrambling to make a card that feels special without spending hours on it. I’m sharing how I tackled that problem by batch-creating five bright, cheerful birthday cards featuring the Mermaid Party Stamp Set, along with a few fantastic birthday sentiments from the Henry & Twila Birthday Clear Stamp Set and the Birthday Critters Clear Stamp Set — all from C.C. Designs!

These cards came together quickly, but they still feel personal and unique, which is exactly what I love about card making.

Building the Base with a Little Ocean Inspiration

I started by creating five top-folding A2 card bases from heavyweight white cardstock. There’s just something about the fresh, clean look of bright white that makes all the colors pop, especially when you're working with playful mermaid images.

For each card front, I layered on a beach or ocean-themed patterned paper (I raided my stash for these), trimmed down to 4" x 5¼". Picking coordinating papers ahead of time helped everything move faster — it’s a little trick I’ve learned when I want to batch-make cards without the process feeling overwhelming.

Pro Tip:
When batch-making, pull together a mini "kit" of papers, embellishments, and inks before you start. It helps cut down on decision fatigue and keeps the creative momentum going!

Spotlight on the Mermaids

The real stars of these cards are, of course, the adorable mermaids from the Mermaid Party Stamp Set. I stamped each one onto a piece of white cardstock cut to 3¼" x 4¼" using an alcohol marker-friendly ink.

When it came to coloring, I kept things super simple: I picked two shades per area — one light and one dark — for their skin, hair, and tails, plus a little pink for those sweet cheeks. Rather than blending everything smoothly, I colored first with the lighter shade and then dropped in bits of the darker shade for quick, easy shadows. It’s a speedy technique that still gives a lot of depth.

Some of the mermaids got rich brown hair, and others ended up with golden blonde locks — just like the different personalities you find in a real beach town. I used two coordinating blue-green markers for all their tails to tie the set together visually.

Pro Tip:
Limiting your color palette across multiple cards keeps them cohesive and speeds up the coloring process — plus it’s a fun creative challenge!

Bringing in the Birthday Cheer

After the coloring was done, it was time for the sentiments! I pulled birthday greetings from both the Henry & Twila Birthday Clear Stamp Set and the Birthday Critters Clear Stamp Set. I stamped them directly onto the patterned paper backgrounds using crisp black ink.

Mixing and matching sentiments across a set of cards adds variety while keeping things playful — and honestly, it makes the process a lot more fun for me. It’s a little like picking out the perfect birthday card from a shop... except way more personal because you made it!

The Finishing Touches

To pull everything together, I adhered the mermaid panels onto the card fronts, popped them onto the card bases, and added just a sprinkle of bling here and there. I also couldn’t resist using a white gel pen to add tiny highlights — especially to the mermaids' hair and tails. Those small touches catch the light beautifully and make the images feel even more lively.

It’s always the little finishing details that make handmade cards feel extra special — and they don’t have to take a lot of time either!

Wrapping It All Up

By focusing on a few smart choices — like pre-selecting papers, limiting my color palette, and keeping coloring simple — I was able to create a whole set of birthday cards that feel cheerful, cohesive, and totally handmade with love.

If you’re looking for a fast way to build up your birthday card stash or just want to have a few cards ready to grab and go, the Mermaid Party Stamp Set and the birthday sentiments from C.C. Designs made it so easy and fun to pull this set together.

Thanks so much for hanging out with me today! I hope you’re feeling inspired to dive into your own stash and make some quick, magical birthday cards. I’d love to hear how you make birthday card creating faster and more fun — feel free to share your favorite tips!
